The Kalamassery Police have launched a manhunt after J. Letha, Pro Vice Chancellor of Jain University, lost nearly ₹2 lakh on Friday after reportedly revealing an OTP to a fraudulent caller who disguised himself as a bank official.
According to the complaint, a person who claimed that he was calling on the instructions of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) told Dr. Letha, a former Cusat Vice Chancellor, that her debit card had been blocked, and that an OTP was required to issue a new chip-attached card. She reportedly divulged an OTP to the caller.
Soon afterwards she received two messages from the bank mentioning that ₹1,92,499 had been debited from her account in two transactions. She informed the District Police Chief (Kochi City), who directed the Kalamassery police to register a case.
