CHENNAI : Despite multiple bans and High Court warnings, banners and hoardings continue to pose threat to motorists’ lives. A 23-year-old woman was crushed to death under the wheels of a water tanker on Thursday, after a banner placed on the median fell on her, knocking her off the bike she was riding.

Subashri, an IT employee residing in Chromepet, was riding on the Pallavaram - Thoraipakkam radial road, when the accident happened.  “The banner, put up by a local political functionary, had come loose. It fell on the biker, knocking her down. As she fell, the tanker lorry coming behind ran over her,” said an official.

Subashri, a B.Tech graduate, was returning home after writing IELTS exam, to go to Canada for higher studies. Police have not booked the persons who erected the banners or the lorry driver. They have filed a case of suspicious death.

Banners vanish in 30 minutes
Locals say that within 30 minutes of the accident, banners placed on the entire stretch of the road were removed. Police have not booked either the lorry driver or those who erected the banners
