Nagpur: Ashish Majumdar, a well-known name in the world of Marathi and Hindi ghazals and the music industry has successfully completed 25 years of offering melodious music to the music lovers.
An established music director and composer in Pune, Majumdar has his roots in Nagpur where he started his musical journey and has never looked back since then.
His first-ever performance as an artist was with ‘Saptak’ which has completed 40 years in the city, delivering quality music programs and shows for years. The bond of music and memories of Majumdar with ‘Saptak’ was celebrated at an event organized at Kavi Kulguru Auditorium at Persistent Systems Ltd on Saturday. Titled ‘Safarnama’, it unfolded Majumdar’s journey in the world of music and composition.
Majumdar, who has worked with renowned personalities from the music industry such as Shankar Mahadevan, has a unique way of composing music and tunes for his songs. The evening was purely dedicated to singing and performing on Majumdar’s songs followed by a short interaction which gave an insight into his long yet successful 25-year-old journey.
Singers such as Anjali Marathe, Niranjan Bobde and Datta Prasad Ranade performed on his songs. Majumdar accompanied them with his magical and ear-pleasing tunes on the harmonium.
The program commenced with singer Anjali Marathe singing ‘Sharlela Kayevarche’ which is a composition close to Majumdar’s heart. “I have worked in the music field for a long time, but I never got bored of it. Every day it teaches me something new. I learnt how to write a song, how to compose it and the essence about the ragas and notation. I did not get any formal training in music, but because of passion, I met many gurus of the music world at different stages of my life. Each one had something new to offer. I’m glad I started my career in Nagpur.” said Majumdar.
The evening was dedicated to appreciating Majumdar’s work. Two video clips of his self-composed songs were also shown to the audience. One was a ‘Koli geet’ ‘Machva Jhultaye Go’ sung and performed by Sharayu Date and a ‘Baal Geet’ ‘Kiti vela sangitla Bappa’ by Ketki Mategaonkar. There was also a video message by Shankar Mhaadevan, who congratulated Majumdar on his glorious years.

On why he didn’t offer his music to Bollywood, Majumdar said, “I have a full-time job. Apart from composing music, I am a lecturer at an engineer college in Pune. I never thought of giving movies a try. Fortunately, I am going to make my debut soon with a movie titled AB and CD which has Amitabh Bachchan. I’m glad to get such an opportunity to work with legends.”
Niranjan Bobde lent his soothing voice to a abhang ‘kay shodhti tu’ and Datta Prasad performed on a ghazal ‘haslo manapra, mane’, ‘sur jahala ishwar’and a kawali ‘shevti shevti khup aalya sari’ which the audience enjoyed to the core. The accompanying artists were Ninad Solapurkar (keyboard), Amod Kulkurni (tabla) and Majumdar’s daughter Kalyani who played the violin beautifully, giving a glimpse of her talent and compositions.
