Thieves burgle gold valuables worth Rs 35 lakh

Mangaluru: In a case that police termed as negligence and a serious security lapse, unidentified burglars broke into a posh apartment, situated on the sixth floor in the heart of the city, and decamped with gold valuables valued at Rs 35 lakh and Rs 65,000.
The incident took place at an apartment near SCS Hospital in Bendoor. M Shantaram, police inspector, Mangaluru East police station, said that the incident took place at the apartment belonging to complainant Nityananda Shetty, when his family had gone to Puttur to stay in their farmhouse. They had left the apartment on September 8 and returned on September 13, only to find that their valuables and money was stolen by thieves.

Shantaram explained that the thieves entered the house by breaking in by using the toilet piping duct. They then broke open a locker and stole the gold ornaments and cash.
He added that the apartment, with more than 80 flats, has only one security personnel guarding it, who works outside during the day, and looks after the security of the apartment at night. Apart from it, there are no other securities arrangements at the apartment. The apartment also doesn’t have a proper compound wall, and anyone can easily jump into the compound due to the low height of the wall. A case has been registered at the Mangaluru East police station in this regard, and an investigation is on.
