MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – It looks like we know why the Patriots were reportedly caught off guard when the news broke about the civil lawsuit Antonio Brown is facing.

According to ESPN, Brown has been in settlement talks with Britney Taylor, who accused him of sexual assault, since April. That likely means the two parties were working under a non-disclosure agreement. There was a deadline of 10 p.m. last Sunday for Brown and Taylor to come to a monetary agreement. When the receiver didn’t sign, the lawsuit was filed and the world found out about the allegations.

The offer rejected by Brown was up north of $2 million, according to ESPN.

The NFL will now reportedly investigate the allegations and plans to meet with Taylor on Monday. Brown made his Patriots debut on Sunday, but didn’t speak to reporters after the game. It remains to be seen what happens from here on out. According to the NFL Network, if Patriots owner Robert Kraft had known about the allegations, he would not have signed off on signing Brown.

Of course, the Patriots could have released the receiver, but chose to play him on Sunday.

Stay tuned.
