PUNE: Four college students were having whale of a time riding on high-end bikes over the past few months. They used to flaunt the mean machines to impress their peers. But they ran out of luck on the Ganapati immersion day.
Acting on a tip-off to constable Vijay More, the crime branch of the Pimpri Chinchwad police on Thursday arrested the four youths for stealing high-end motorcycles and other vehicles for joyrides. They used to ride on the stolen two-wheelers with fictitious number plates.
“The youth’s questioning has helped police in recovering seven vehicles — three high-end bikes, a motorcycle, a moped and two scooters, collectively worth Rs8.5 lakh,” said senior inspector Uttam Tangade of the crime branch (Unit 1) in a statement issued on Saturday.
“Investigations revealed that two of the arrested youths were brothers and one of them worked for an e-commerce firm. He was fined Rs1.08 lakh for stealing five smartphones from a parcel,” Tangade said in the statement.
The four arrested youths are residents of Sangvi, Yerawada and Lohegaon.
A source said the police were conducting patrolling for Ganapati immersion on Thursday when More received the information that the youths were riding on high-end bikes having fictitious number plates. A team under deputy commissioner of police Sudhir Hiremath and assistant commissioner of police R Patil took the youths into custody on suspicion. They revealed during the questioning that they did not have the vehicles’ documents.
Tangade’s statement read that the four admitted to stealing the vehicles from Nigdi, Dighi and Yerawada. They conceded to have used the stolen vehicles for going to the college and meeting friends. The youths parked the high-end bikes in the parking areas of housing societies and at the residence of friends.
