BHUBANESWAR: A male
elephant of Nandankanan zoo
Chandan died here on Sunday due to virus attack. Despite treatment being offered by the veterinarians, the animal didn’t survive.
Zoo deputy director
Jayant Das said the pachyderm’s appetite reduced suddenly and nasal discharge was seen. Thereafter, veterinary doctors started treatment. “The death was due to
herpes virus infection. To ascertain other causes of death, sample from the carcass has been collected for
autopsy,” said Das. He added that due care is being taken to check spreading of the virus.
After its death, the zoo currently has six elephant. Chandan had been rescued from
Chandaka wildlife sanctuary and brought to Nandankanan in August, 2010.
