AHMEDABAD:
Gujarat education department’s decision to issue show-cause notices to primary schoolteachers for their long absence from work has drawn flak.
The long list of 411 absentees includes teachers whose leave applications have been approved, or who have already resumed work after they were warned earlier.
What has become a major embarrassment for the government is that the list also mentions teachers who have not only resigned and quit but also those who have
retired.
To make matters worse, the list mentions names of as many as 10 teachers who are dead, reportedly. The mistake was made despite their death certificates being furnished and their financial settlements being closed.
“The list has 59 teachers who have retired and are receiving pension. They are no longer on the list of regular teachers. We are not sure how this goof-up occurred,” said a government official. Twenty-three teachers who have resigned and quit were also served show-cause notice.
The department realized the blunder after they got calls from teachers and their relatives who were served notices, the official said.
The list contains 47 names of teachers who went back to work after receiving an initial warning. Over 50 others, who got notices, had applied for long-term leaves which were duly approved by their respective school authorities, the official added.
The
education department has meanwhile initiated inquiry against 136 out of the 411 primary teachers who they found to be irregular at work.
The attendance irregularities were first noticed by the department following the implementation of the online attendance of teachers from February this year. Gujarat government recently decided to introduce facial recognition attendance system in primary schools.
All district primary education officers (DPEOs) have been asked to gather relevant details from pay centres, cross-check with schools and issue public notices warning teachers to resume work or face harsh punishment including suspension, the government official said.
Thirty-nine primary schoolteachers were suspended recently by the state education department for not attending work for over a year.
