England vs Australia 5th Ashes Test Day 3 Highlights: ENG build on lead

England vs Australia 5th Ashes Test Aus vs Eng 5th Test Day 3 Highlights: Joe Root's team are desperate to level the series at 2-2 to end their historic World Cup-winning season on a high but have been consistently dogged by the peerless Smith.

England vs Australia (Eng vs Aus) 5th Ashes Test Highlights: England have ended Day 3 of the 5th Ashes Test in London at 313/8, building on their first innings lead to be ahead of Australia by 382 runs. Jack Leach and Jofra Archer were the unbeaten batsmen at the end of the day, and they will begin batting for England on the morning of Day 4.

Ben Stokes (67) and Joe Denly (94) batted England into a potentially match-winning position on Day 3, before Jos Buttler (47) batted with the lower order to take England’s lead close to 400. The tourists came into the match hungry to wrap up their first series victory in England since 2001 after winning the 4th Test to take a 2-1 lead but that looks increasingly unlikely.

England vs Australia 5th Ashes Test Day 3 Highlights:

End of Day 3

Pat Cummins bowls out the last over of the day. Leach and Archer survive till the end of the day and they will start batting on Day 4. England end the day with a lead of 382 runs and 2 wickets in hand.

Labuschagne

Labuschagne's leg spin is brought on with minutes left for close of play. He got Leach in a similar sort of situation in the last Test. Archer and Leach are trying to ensure England are not all out today. They lead by 380.

Another screamer of a catch

Buttler is gone! He goes for a 63-ball 47. Has come good in this Test after a modest showing throughout the series. It was Labuschagne this time who ran in from the deep and took a diving catch. England lose their batting order. Leach and Archer in the middle now. Their lead still 374. Could Australia now hope to wrap up this innings by Day 3?

Woakes is out

Woakes is out! What a great one-handed catch by Steve Smith in the slips. There are around 20 minutes of play left for today. England's lead is now up to 374. Maybe they will not declare today, for all the aggressive batting by Buttler. The declaration could come, if it comes, sometime in the first session of Day 4, or maybe at the lunch break tomorrow. Which would give Australia 5 sessions to bat.

Three hundred up

Jos Buttler is setting his foot rightly and is having fun with Hazlewood and Cummins, tormenting them with his cover drives. He has been simply brilliant this afternoon, he's on 44* from 52 balls. Ten runs from the over. ENG are 300/6 after 84 overs.

CAUGHT BEHIND!

Sam Curran goes as Pat Cummins bags his first wicket of the innings. The youngster departs for 17 after a tidy knock exisiting of 26 balls. On comes Chris Woakes. ENG are 279/6 after 80.4 overs.

Buttler shines

Jos Buttler has been showing signs of his first innings, holding firm, first with Jonny Bairstow and now with the 21-year-old Sam Curran. They have formed a 26-run partnership so far. ENG are 275/5 after 79 overs. They now have a massive lead of 344 runs.

WICKET!

After a quick 27-run partnership with Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow falls for 14 after Mitchell Marsh bags his first of the second innings. Steve Smith with yet another catch. ENG are 249/5 after 72.3 overs. They have a lead of 318 runs.

DENLY'S GONE!

It's falling apart here for England now, as Joe Denly is dismissed by Peter Siddle. A monumental innings from Denly, who just missed his century, as he departed for 94 off 206 balls. Steve Smith with the catch. ENG are 222/4 after 67 overs.

WICKET!

BREAKTHROUGH! Nathan Lyon, the saviour of Australia again! Ben Stokes departs for 67 as the 127-run partnership is bowled by the off-spinner. ENG are 214/3 after 64 overs.

England continue to romp

After a maiden opening over in the third session, England have absolutely flashed their bats like kings. 18 runs from the last two overs with Denly touching the 90 mark. ENG are 211/2 after 63 overs.

Time for tea

Closing the second session of the day, Labuschagne just conceded one run from the over. Yet, Australia have no answers with the ball against the third-wicket partnership which has already amassed 106 runs. Denly and Stokes are on fire. ENG are 193/2 after 60 overs. The lead stands at 262.

Stokes gets his fifty

Looking for your 19th Test half-century? Just hit Marnus Labuschagne for a six in style to achieve it. After that, Stokes is looking far more composed controlling with Denly on the other side, looking for his century. Stokes is on 55* while Denly is on 78*. ENG are 187/2 after 58 overs. They lead by 256 runs now.

England looking solid

Hello, hello, England are cruising now. Denly and Stokes look filled with confidence, as they are hitting the Australian quicks for a boundary almost every over. Denly hit Labuschagne for eight  runs this over. ENG are 155/2 after 50 overs. The lead is up to 224 now.

Denly's fifty powers hosts

After getting the third half-century of the series, Joe Denly continues to be the lynchpin of this England side who are eyeing to set a big target for Australia. They already have a lead of 202 runs, and Australia are failing to come with an answer from their pacers. Denly's on 54*, while Stokes is on 26*. ENG are 133/2 after 44 overs.

Hundred up for England

After minutes of resilience and patience, England have finally brought their hundred up with a single from Joe Denly. They have extended their lead to 170 now. ENG are 101/2 after 37 overs.

Play resumes

Pat Cummins restarts the proceedings, but Joe Denly holds firm and hits him for a sweet four with a perfectly timed cover drive. England have started well after the lunch break here. ENG are 96/2 after 32 overs.

Time for some lunch

After Rory Burns and Joe Root walked back to the pavilion, England have steadied themselves somewhat with Joe Denly and Ben Stokes on the crease. The momentum was with Australia though, but they would hope to regain some of it after the break. ENG are 88/2 after 30 overs.

WICKET!

Nathan Lyon strikes again! Joe Root is gone, and without a half-century this time. Steve Smith with the catch. ENG are 87/2 after 28 overs.

Root looking strong

Joe Root has started brilliantly here, maintaining a strike rate of more than 100 in his opening 11 balls. Can he finally gets his century, or will he again fall after scoring another half-century? Denly's on 28* while Root's on 13*. Just the three runs from Hazlewood's over. ENG are 70/1 after 22 overs.

WICKET!

And off he goes against the run of play. Nathan Lyon strikes, dismissing Rory Burns and forcing Joe Root to come on. Tim Paine with the catch. ENG are 54/1 after 16.3 overs.

50-run partnership

Peter Siddle bowls to Rory Burns, and he hits him for a four, and with that England have brought up the 50-run partnership on the opening wicket. Burns is on 20* while Denly is on 24*. ENG are 53/0 after 16 overs.

Harris injured

Marcus Harris suffered split webbing on his left hand after a failed catch of Joe Denly yesterday. He required seven stitches and won't field today. He is expected to bat though.

Burns, Denly start well

Starting the day on 9/0, Rory Burns and Joe Denly have got England to a decent start on the third day. Weathering Pat Cummins' and Josh Hazlewood's deliveries, they have got 11 runs in three overs. ENG are 20/0 after 7 overs.
