CHENNAI: The city police on Thursday
bust an
online gambling racket and arrested two people from a house in Choolai during a raid following specific information. Police also seized Rs 53lakh from the suspects and launched a hunt for one more person.
The accused were allegedly accepting betting money online from punters for IPL matches, one day internationals as well as T20 matches. The accused have been identified as Rahul D Jain, 24, a resident of Sowcarpet, and Dinesh, 29, a resident of Kothavalchavadi. Rahul has a BCom degree from a private college in Arumbakkam. They were also into online betting for gold prices. The gang was operating from the house in Choolai for the past two weeks. They also bet on share trading commodities.
A police team headed by east Chennai joint commissioner of police R Sudhakar and Vepery assistant commissioner of police K Maheshwari conducted checks based on the tip-off from a person whose relative lost Rs 10 lakh and Rs 20 lakh on two occasions.
Police caught them after sending a decoy posing as a client.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the
bookies met clients at hookah bars in Nungambakkam and Sowcarpet. These are the main meet-up points where they struck a deal.
“The bookies select their punters carefully. They do not recruit a person unless a background check is conducted and accept new punters only on the recommendation of the existing ones,” said an investigating officer.
In 12 days, the bookies earned Rs 2 crore. Police suspect that betting gangs in the city are associated with bigger networks in Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Mumbai and if the amount exceeds Rs 1lakh, the bet is routed through bigger bookies. A case has been registered and police are investigating.
Earlier, an IPL betting scam was bust by former ‘Q’ branch superintendent of police G Sampath Kumar and CB-CID police apprehended more suspects in 2013. This rocked the
cricket world and business community in Chennai.
