Water charge not on GMC board meet agenda on Friday

GHAZIABAD: The takeover of an electric crematorium from Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) and handover of land for the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) project will top the agenda of the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) board meeting on Friday.
In all, 58 proposals will be discussed at the board meeting. However, a proposal to introduce a ‘water charge’ will not be taken up.
“It was decided that it first needs to be studied by a committee and so far, that has not been formed,” said a GMC official.
GMC had suggested the introduction of a water charge, which, if it comes into effect, will vary from Rs 1,050 to Rs 7,680 in residential areas.
The proposal on the electric crematorium’s handover may not see smooth sailing at the meeting. “GMC will have to spend Rs 1-1.5 lakh to maintain the crematorium and so it is wary of taking control. We are expecting stiff opposition from members,” added the official. The handover of 4,000 sqm of land in Hindon Eco Park to NCRTC for the RRTS project will also be taken up at the meeting. “GMC will have to spend Rs 1-1.5 lakh to maintain the crematorium and so it is wary of taking control. We are expecting stiff opposition from members,” added the official.

Another proposal that will be taken up will be handover of 4,000 sqm of land in Hindon Eco Park to National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) for the RRTS project. “There is an inherent problem in this because the Eco Park comes under the green belt and NCRTC wants the land for developing a power sub-station, which is a violation,” said the official.
Among other proposals to be taken up are the handover of 28 acres of land near Mahamaya stadium to GDA for a park and the mortgage of 36,000 sqm of land in Bhojna village with a bank for raising municipal bonds.
