TIRUPUR: A 33-year-old woman attempted to commit
suicide by slitting her wrists on Wednesday after a moneylender allegedly tortured her and her family, demanding more money than they owe him for returning signed cheques and a blank signatory document that she had submitted to him while borrowing money.
The woman, identified as J Jicilla, of Rayapuram, has been admitted to Tirupur government hospital, where condition is said to be stable.
According to a police officer, Jicilla had taken a loan of Rs8 lakh from Gobinath, a
DMK functionary, by pledging her property document last year. He had also received two signed cheques and a signed blank paper from Jicilla.
Jicilla told police that they had returned the money, along with an interest of Rs4 lakh, to Gobinath. “He returned them the property document, while holding back the cheques and blank signatory document. Gobinath demanded more money to return them. He once locked up her house and Jicilla had then sought police help,” the officer said quoting the woman.
On September 6, Tirupur north police had registered a case against Jicilla and her family members for allegedly attacking Vignesh, an aide of Gobinath, when he went to her house. On Wednesday, Jicilla slit her wrists, saying Gobinath has been torturing her and her family members.
“We were yet to ascertain about the money dealing between Jicilla and Gobinath. We were conducting inquiry and we will take appropriate action,” the officer said.
