Mangaluru: While poor road conditions is one of the major reasons for an increase in accidents, especially on highways, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has been attempting to close
unauthorised median openings on the
Kundapur-Surathkal and
Nanthoor-Talapady sections of NH-66. However, their action will depend on getting police protection.
It has been nearly two months since the NHAI has attempted to close down unauthorised median openings. In a letter dated July 5 to the additional chief secretary, public works, ports and inland water transport department, the NHAI has asked for police protection. The deputy commissioners of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi have been requested to provide security so that the NHAI can close unauthorised and unscientific median openings in the project stretch for four laning of the Kundapur-Surtahkal section of NH-66. According to sources, there are 10 unauthorised median openings in Dakshina Kannada and four in Udupi, on the national highway.
The NHAI believes that such spots are prone to accidents, and many fatal accidents have already happened here, which could have been avoided if these unauthorized median openings were closed.
A senior NHAI official said that the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety is closely monitoring the accident data in Karnataka, and has set annual targets of reduction of not less than 10 per cent of road related fatalities on the basis of analysis of accident data. Further, as per the Karnataka State Road Safety Policy 2015, it is aimed at reducing road accidents by 25 per cent and fatalities by 30 per cent by 2020.
A senior NHAI officer said, “We are yet to receive a positive response from the district administration in this regard”.
Twitter users appeal to Union minister Gadkari
Last week, Bengalureans took to social media demanding ‘Roadyaan’ before undertaking ‘Chandrayaan-2,’ mocking the pathetic state of roads in Bengaluru, and attempted to draw the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue. Back in Mangaluru, the condition of roads, especially highways, is no better, and several citizens have tried to bring the issue of the pathetic road conditions to the notice of minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari.
The public have expressed anger against the Congress and BJP, as they feel neither of the major political parties are bothered about the condition of roads, and only speak about it during the election. The NHAI said that once rainfall reduces, permanent restoration will take place of the highway. Temporary measures including filling of potholes and draining off water is taking place at various locations of the highway stretch
