Mercedes brought the all-new GLE Coupe to the Frankfurt Motor Show for its official debut, alongside the EQS electric luxury sedan concept.
Compared to the standard GLE, the Coupe features not only the love-or-hate lower roofline and restyled rear end, but also a 60mm shorter wheelbase, making it more agile and claiming to offer sportier handling.
However, when compared to its predecessor, the new GLE Coupe is bigger in every metric that counts, including the wheelbase, in order to offer more space for its occupants. The rest of the cabin is standard GLE fair, meaning a modern cockpit with a dual-screen setup and the company’s MBUX infotainment system.
Under the bonnet of the new Mercedes AMG GLE 53 Coupe sits AMG’s mild-hybrid powertrain, which combines a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with an EQ Boost starter-alternator, which can provide an extra 21 HP and 184 lb-ft (250 Nm) of torque momentarily. Their combined output is 429 HP (435 PS) and 384 lb-ft (521 Nm) of torque.
The six-cylinder engine employs one classic turbocharger and one electric compressor that essentially chucks air inside the engine at high pressure from the get-go in collaboration with the EQ Boost electric motor, effectively eliminating turbo lag. A nine-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels and 0-62 mph (100km/h) is a matter of 5.3 seconds, while top speed is limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).
The new Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe comes fitted with the AMG Ride Control+ air suspension as standard, ensuring sportier handling and improved comfort. There are seven drive modes, five for the tarmac (Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual), and two especially tailored to off-road driving (Trail and Sand).
