15 held for group clash during temple festival at Villupuram

Two persons, including a sub-inspector, sustained injuries

Tension prevailed at Pombur colony after members belonging to two communities pelted stones against each other during a temple festival on Monday night. Two persons including a sub-inspector of police sustained injuries. The police arrested 15 people from both the groups in connection with the incident.

According to the police, members of Pombur colony were involved in conducting the procession of the local Mariamman temple, when another group objected to the use of firecrackers. An altercation broke out between the two groups and they pelted stones against each other. Tension mounted after one group set fire to a sugarcane field. Mailam sub-inspector Syed Mohammed Ali and Nagappan of Pombur colony sustained minor burn injuries in the incident.

Police personnel have been stationed at Pombur. Based on a complaint lodged by V. Nagappan, 55, of Pombur colony, the Mailam police have registered a case under Sections 147, 148, 294 (b), 323, 324, 427, 506 (ii) of the Indian Penal Code read with Section 3 (2) of SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Amendment Act, 2015.

Case registered

On the other side, R. Ramesh, 43 of Pombur preferred a complaint and a case was registered under Sections 147, 148, 435 of IPC read with Section 4 of PPD Act.

Senior police officials said the situation was under control and the police picketing would continue in the village.
