AHMEDABAD: A 32-year-old woman on Monday filed a complaint with Women’s police station (east), alleging that her husband died due to constant harassment from his mother. The allegation was made in a complaint of domestic violence, after the woman was forced to leave her in-laws’ house with her two children, one year after her husband’s death.
In her FIR, the complainant, a resident of Girdharnagar, stated that she married a Shahibaug resident on June 13, 2005. Till two years after their wedding, her mother-in-law’s behaviour was decent, but she later began harassing not only her but also her husband, over trivial issues, the FIR states.
“Whenever my husband asked his mother not to harass me, my mother-in-law would harass him and sometimes also hit him badly,” the complainant stated. She further stated that her husband was so tormented by his mother’s behaviour that he began suffering from depression. In August 2018, her husband met with an accident and suffered severe injuries. Her mother-in-law had then told him ‘to die’, the complainant alleged, adding that her husband could not bear the harassment and died from cardiac arrest on September 23, 2018.

After his death, the complainant continued to live with her mother-in-law in Shahibaug. Recently, her mother-in-law threatened and assaulted her and threw her belonging out of the house, forcing the complainant and her two children, aged 12 and eight, to live somewhere else.
The woman had approached Shahibaug police in August to get rights to the in-laws’ place, but no action was taken. She later filed an application with the women’s police station (east).
