MUMBAI: The pain of parting will engulf devotees as ten days of Ganeshotsav festivity draw to a close at Anant Chaturdashi Thursday.
As mandals began to put the final touches to the farewell procession, darshan came to a close Wednesday night.
In Lalbaug, lakhs of people will congregate to witness the majestic line-up of tall moortis headed to Chowpatty seafront for visarjan. The Mumbaicha Raja of Ganesh Gully is the first to leave its pandal around 8.00am while the Lalbaugcha Raja is the last to be immersed at that hour Friday. In Kurla, the 100-year-old Ganpati of the Brahman Seva Sangh will be led to Sheetal Talao in a traditional palkhi procession, said spokesperson Nitin Rahalkar. The Vikhroli Cha Raja draws large crowds in the eastern suburbs.
Meanwhile, the 'pushpavrushti' or flower shower mandals of Lalbaug are crafting gigantic tableaux to sprinkle flowers and gulal upon passing Ganpatis from a height of two or three storeys. The Shroff Building pushpavrushti mandal is celebrating its golden jubilee alongside the 100th anniversary of its patron Ganpati mandal, the Chinchpokli Cha Chintamani. "We have crafted a sea of hands bearing the tools of our trade holding aloft the number 50. We will sprinkle one tonne of flower petals and 500 kg gulal through the day," said spokesman Shridhar Bandiwadekar.
Sadanand Building next door has designed a 16-foot-tall lifelike model of Lokmanya Tilak holding a Ganpati idol. "The reason is that the year 2020 marks the death centenary of Tilak. It was he who initiated the sarvajanik Ganeshotsav in 1892-93 which has grown exponentially since then," said mandal spokesman Atmaram Parab. Sadanand residents have requisitioned 300 kilos of fragrant rose petals and 150 kilos of gulal for the flower shower.
"Each year as we bid goodbye to the deity, we recite the chant 'Ganpati Bappa morya, pudhchya varshi lavkar ya!' Next year in 2020, the lord will indeed arrive early as Ganeshotsav falls August 22," said Pandit Prakash Pendse of Thane.
