Residents of Sringeri taluk, under the leadership of T.D. Raje Gowda, MLA, offered prayers to Rishyasringa, considered a rain god, at Kigga near Sringeri on Monday. The devotees prayed for the heavy rains to stop.
Parts of Sringeri, Koppa, N.R. Pura, Mudigere and Chikkamagaluru have been receiving heavy rains for the past few days. In August, many parts of the district received heavy rains and saw landslips, leaving properties damaged. Interestingly, whenever the State suffers from drought, people and their representatives offer prayers to Rishyasringa seeking rains. Many parts of Chikkamagaluru district received moderate to heavy rains on Sunday and Monday. According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Cell, the average rainfall recorded in the district in the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Monday was 31 mm, as against the normal rainfall of 3 mm.
The average rainfall in Sringeri was 79 mm, against the normal rainfall of 9 mm, while in Koppa it was 67 mm, as against the normal rainfall of 7 mm. N.R. Pura received 41 mm of rain, as opposed to the normal quantum of 3 mm. In Mudigere, the actual rainfall was 43 mm.
