A functionary of the Congress at Cherupuzha here stepped down on Monday in view of the allegation raised against a trust he is a member of in the aftermath of the death of a building contractor a few days ago.
The Leader K. Karunakaran Smaraka Trust run by local Congress leadership at Cherupuzha has been in the dock since the suspected suicide of Joseph Muthuparakunnel, the building contractor on September 5.
He had been found dead with his wrist slashed on the terrace of the building. Joseph had been the contractor of the building, partly owned by the trust.
Complaint
The relatives of the deceased lodged a complaint to the police that he had ended his life under strain due to non-payment of the pending contract amount by the building owners.
The CPI(M) has also demanded action against those responsible for the death of the contractor.
The District Congress Committee (DCC) here informed that K.K. Suresh Kumar, president of the Cherupuzha block Congress committee, stepped down in the context of the allegation raised against the trust he is member of following the death of the contractor.
His resignation followed his conviction that it was not morally right to continue in the post as the trust was facing the allegation, the DCC informed in a press note.
His resignation letter stated that he would show to the public the truth about the allegation levelled against the party and act as a party worker to redress the embarrassment the incident at Cherupuzha had caused to the party, the release said.
Congress with victim
DCC president Satheeshan Pacheni said that unlike the CPI(M), the Congress would always be with the victim.
At a press conference on Monday, he said that the party would initiate all measures required to ensure that the bereaved family of the deceased got justice without delay.
He said that the party had no connection with the trust or with two private companies. But since local functionaries were members of the trust and the two private companies, the party would examine whether the party functionaries made any slip-up, he said. Mr. Pacheni also said that the party would support any kind of legal inquiry into the death of the contractor.
