During Apple's special event previewing its upcoming offerings, CEO Tim Cook dropped some big news about forthcoming streaming service Apple TV+. The service, which includes buzzy new shows like Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston's The Morning Show and millennial Emily Dickinson riff Dickinson, will launch on Friday, Nov. 1 with its first crop of shows and cost $4.99 per month. And if you buy an Apple device, a year of Apple TV+ will be included for free.
Though the existing Apple TV app will continue to exist as a marketplace for buying and renting titles and aggregator of third-party subscription services, Apple TV+ is launching without a library of licensed content, which puts it at a disadvantage compared to other upcoming streaming services like HBO Max and Disney+. Apple TV+'s low price point is obviously meant to compete with Disney+, which will cost $6.99 per month and launches Nov. 12.

That series will be available on launch day, along with The Morning Show; Dickinson; Ronald D. Moore's sci-fi series For All Mankind; Helpsters, a children's series from the makers of Sesame Street; Snoopy in Space; Ghostwriter, a reboot of the classic kids' show; nature doc The Elephant Queen; and a streaming version of Oprah's book club. Further shows will be released monthly.
