Proteas looking to build to the future

2019-09-10 21:17

Cape Town - Proteas team director Enoch Nkwe believes that it's about time South Africa look to the future.

The Proteas are currently in India with wicket-keeper batsman Quinton de Kock leading the T20 side, while Faf du Plessis will remain Test captain ahead of the three-match series that follows the T20 matches.

Last month, CSA acting director of cricket Corrie van Zyl revealed that Du Plessis still remains an integral part of the Proteas T20 squad.

Nkwe believes that in appointing De Kock, the Proteas are looking ahead to the future.

"It's an opportunity to start building for the future, we know where Faf stands as a captain and player," said Nkwe on Tuesday in India.

"He has done great things for South African cricket so we need to look at what the future looks like. We strongly believe in Quinton, who is going to lead the team going forward into the series."

The Proteas come off a disappointing World Cup campaign which saw them finish 7th overall.

Nkwe, who is taking part in his first assignment since accepting the team director role, says that the Proteas are determined to win in India.

"If you look at the guys, we got good enough experience from a guy like Quinton, who has played a lot of games in India, and we have some new blood in," said Nkwe.

"We will remain competitive and want to walk away with a series win. The entire squad is very determined, we are here to win and we understand that our opposition is strong in their own backyard but we're going to give 100 percent."

The first T20 gets underway on Sunday at 15:30 SA time.
