THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: MP
Shashi Tharoor has expressed his desire to
quit as chairman of
KPCC digital media cell which was formed hardly a year ago.
The decision was conveyed to other members of the
digital media cell during a meeting held last week. However, other leaders are learnt to have requested Tharoor not to press for his resignation.
The timing of Tharoor’s move raised speculation that his act reflected disappointment over the way KPCC had reacted to his alleged ‘pro-Modi’ statement.
Though KPCC president Mullappally Ramachandran accepted Tharoor’s explanation that he didn’t support Modi, other leaders like K Muraleedharan continued criticising Tharoor.
Sources close to Tharoor, however, dismissed those speculations and said Tharoor conveyed his request to free him from digital cell responsibility to KPCC president Mullappally Ramachandran by mid-August.
That was days before his controversial tweet on Modi, arguing Modi should be praised whenever he did good things. It is learnt that Mullappally advised him not to take a hurried decision as he needed to find a proper replacement for Tharoor.
After Tharoor taking over the charge of digital media cell, Anil Antony, son of veteran leader A K Antony, was appointed as the convener of the cell. During the Lok Sabha poll, the cell worked overtime to project the UDF candidates in various social media platforms.
