A week after enforcing the revised fines, the city traffic police have collected over ₹72 lakh (₹72,49,900) towards various traffic violations starting from September 4 to 10 a.m. of September 9.

According to an official release, the highest fines have been collected for violations related to not wearing helmets, pillion riders not wearing helmets and using mobile phones while riding.

According to the traffic police, as many as 6,813 motorists were booked for violations.

The highest number of cases registered are of those riding without a helmet — both riders and pillion riders. A total of 4,613 cases have been booked for this.

Not wearing seat-belts and using mobile phones while riding or driving are next on the list with 708 and 695 cases being registered respectively.

The traffic police have also booked 72 cases of drunk driving across the city, lower compared to the normal weekend special drive, mainly because of the hefty fine on this particular violation, a senior police officer said.

In addition to this, the traffic police have also slapped a fine of ₹500 on a biker for riding with a bald tyre. The police also booked 11 cases against motorists for riding with defective number plates.

“Our aim is not to collect more fines but to strengthen traffic discipline among motorists and reduce the number of accidents,” a senior police officer said .
