Gold bars, SD cards worth Rs 8 crore seized at Delhi's IGI

NEW DELHI: Gold bars and SD cards worth over Rs 8 crore have been seized at the Indira Gandhi International airport in a span of 48 hours. Eight people, including a woman, have been arrested.
In the first incident, two Indians landed in the net upon their arrival from the UAE for allegedly smuggling gold bars worth over Rs 24 lakh. They were intercepted by Customs officials after they had crossed the Green Channel post their arrival from Abu Dhabi. A search of the passengers resulted in recovery of five gold bars and one cut piece of gold bar worth over Rs 24 lakh. During questioning, they admitted to have smuggled currencies, gold and commercial goods worth over Rs 1 crore in the past as well.
In another incident, two Indians, who arrived at the Delhi airport from Saudi Arabia's Jeddah via Abu Dhabi on September 5, were arrested for smuggling five gold cut pieces weighing 648 grams worth over Rs 23 lakh. They also admitted to have smuggled valuables worth Rs 1,77,40,102 earlier, said an official.

In the third incident, mobile phones, laptop batteries and memory cards worth over Rs 4 crore were seized from three Indians. While one of them had arrived from Hong Kong, two others were planning to go to Mumbai. The arrested men admitted to have smuggled memory cards worth over Rs 4.5 crore during their past four visits.
Meanwhile, an Indian woman, who arrived from Dubai, was arrested for carrying 301 grams of gold in the paste form.
