BELAGAVI: Upbraided for continuously playing video games on his smartphone, a 21-year-old diploma student locked up his mother in a room and beheaded his 60-year-old father at their residence in Kakati village of Belagavi district in the early hours of Monday.
Shankreppa Revappa Kumbar had retired from the District Armed Reserve, a unit of the police department, three months ago. When police arrived at the crime spot after neighbours alerted them, a blood-soaked Raghuvir was seen chopping his father's body into parts with a sickle. He was taken into custody.

Police sources said Raghuvir was so addicted to smartphone games that the second-year diploma student, even after his arrest, was beseeching officials to return his cellphone so that he could continue playing in the police station.

On Sunday morning, Kumbar asked his son to cut down on cellphone usage and concentrate on his studies. Raghuvir turned angry and fought with his father. In a fit of rage, he damaged the windowpanes of neighbouring houses. After the neighbours filed a complaint, police summoned Raghuvir and warned him.
Despite police warning, Raghuvir was caught playing video games by his father on Sunday night. Angry that he was pulled up repeatedly, Raghuvir locked his mother in a room and attacked his father. Neighbours woke up and alerted police after hearing the cries of Raghuvir's mother. By the time cops arrived, Raghuvir had killed his father.
