Backward Classes Welfare Minister M. Sankara Narayana on Monday held a review meeting with the irrigation engineers in charge of the Tungabhadra High Level Canal and its branch canals following breaches to them on two consecutive days, leading to loss of irrigation water in the district.
Former Uravakonda MLA Y. Visveswara Reddy also joined the Minister in the review meeting at the R&B Guest House. When the Minister asked the officials as to why there were frequent breaches in the canal despite modernisation works taken up, the engineers said while widening and lining were done, the structures on the canals were not completed, and that was leading to the breaches.
The Minister then blamed the contractors for taking up only the financially beneficial works and ignoring those that needed investment and skill job, in the past five years.
The Minister later went to the Revenue Bhavan at the Collectorate and interacted with the people waiting there as part of Spandana programme to get their grievances redressed. Mr. Sankara Narayana sat there and personally received petitions for some time.
