An 11-year-old girl who was tragically thrown from a ute and died on the weekend in Western Australia was a star student who had been offered four scholarships from schools around the country.

Abbey Forrest had also recently been awarded the Young Person of the Year Award at the East Kimberley Aboriginal Achievement Awards.

Police have revealed an 11-year-old boy was behind the wheel when he lost control of the ute as he was four-wheel-driving on marsh flats near the town of Wyndham in the state's far north on Saturday.

Major crash investigators travelled to the site on Monday and police have said the driver is assisting them with their investigation but no charges have been laid.

Abbey's brother, Tom Forrest, is a reporter for the ABC and said she was due to fly to Perth on Monday to begin her induction to private school.

'A lot of people knew who she was and what she'd done at such a young age,' he told the ABC

'I want people to remember her personality, for what she'd done and the impact she'd made on people's lives.'

He went on to say that he could not comment on the circumstances of the crash other than it was not unusual for kids living in the Kimberley to get adventurous and head out to the marsh flats.

'Think about what you're doing, and if people are doing something silly, just pull them up. Terrible things can happen and there's no turning it back,' Forrest said.

The crash is one of two fatal crashes in The Kimberley last weekend.

Police are investigating after a 19-year-old man from Kununurra hit a tree while he was riding a motorcycle.
