Two agriculturalists have filed a petition before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday challenging the government’s decision to construct check dams across the Manjalar river at Kunnuvarankottai and Kanavaipatti in Nilakottai taluk in Dindigul district.

The petitioners T.V.R. Ramdoss and Athimoolam from Dindigul district said that construction of the check dams would affect the old ayacut agriculturalists. The proposed check dams were within one kilometre of each other, which served no purpose to the agriculturalists, they said.

The Water Users Association of the region had also made a representation to the authorities concerned to abandon the plan as it would only amount to wastage of money, the petitioners said and sought a stay on the project.

A Division Bench of Justices T.S. Sivagnanam and Krishnan Ramasamy ordered notice to the State and adjourned the hearing. The case was posted along with a connected petition.
