Structures are weak, cannot be repaired: KMRCL; compensation given to 52 families

The Kolkata Metro Railway Corporation Limited has obtained permission for demolishing five houses in Kolkata’s Bowbazar area, senior KMRCL officials said on Monday.

“We have constituted a committee which has obtained permission from the house owners. The work will start from Tuesday,” a senior official said.

All the five houses are in the Durga Pituary Lane. KMRCL authorities said the structures are weak and cannot be repaired. The agency which is implementing the East West Metro project has also assured that they will rebuild the houses once the grouting work is complete.

So far half-a-dozen houses in the area have collapsed in Durga Pituary Lane and Sankrapara Lane. One more house collapsed in the Sankrapara area on Monday morning.

KMRCL general manager (administration) A.K. Nandy said a compensation of ₹5 lakh has been given to 52 families since tunnelling for the East West Metro hit the underground water reservoir. “Nineteen families were given cheques earlier last week, we have given money to 33 families through bank transfer,” Mr. Nandy said.

500 people affected

More than 500 people from over 70 families have been affected and have been provided alternative accommodation.

KMRCL authorities said they are arranging for rented accommodations for the families that had to shift from the Bowbazar area.

The work for grouting and strengthening of soil in the Bowbazar area is continuing meanwhile.
