ALWAR /JAIPUR: Preliminary investigation into the Behror police station attack has revealed that gangster Vikram Singh, alias Papla, was talking to his henchmen over phone while in police custody to fool them into thinking that he was arranging for money when, in fact, he was directing his gang to storm the place before he was taken to the court.
The Rajasthan police suspect that the audacious raid on the police station by Papla’s gang was an outcome of an allegedly failed deal between the gangster and the officers of the police station on Friday.“Papla was caught on a highway with Rs 31 lakh in cash. Police did not know his real identity and were presumably under an impression that the person in their custody was a wealthy criminal,” a police officer told TOI.The events that preceded the gang’s attack cast suspicion over the conduct of the staff of the police station.
“Papla was taken to the police station at 4am. A few minutes later a police officer allowed Papla to make a call. At 7.45am, a local history-sheeter, Vinod Swami, walked into the police station and tried to negotiate. When Swami’s efforts failed, he left the police station within 30 minutes. Papla was asked to make another call,” the police officer said, adding that the gangster told police that the entire “panchayat” was on its way to the police station.

The sleuths suspect that in his last conversation with his henchmen, Papla may have conveyed in a coded lingo that there were not many policemen inside the police station and that 80 to 90 rounds of fire would suffice for the raid.
Vinod Swami was arrested by the Special Operations Group (SOG) on Friday, while the officers of the Behror police station have been kept away from the investigation. Even as the SOG is probing the lock-up break by Papla, the IGP (Jaipur) is probing the conduct of the police station.
