Passenger vehicles sales down by 41.09% in August, worst since 1997-98

There has been an overall decline of 23.55% in vehicles sales while alone in the passenger car segment, it has drop down to 41.09%.

The automobile industry is facing its worst crisis since 1997-1998 as sales across different segments have further drop down in the month of August, according to the latest data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

There has been an overall decline of 23.55% in vehicles sales while alone in the passenger car segment, it has drop down to 41.09%.

  • Overall sales down: 23.55%
  • Passenger car sales down: 41.09%
  • Total Passenger Vehicle sales down: 31.57%
  • Total commercial vehicle sales: 38.71% 
  • Total three-wheeler sales down: 6.93%
  • Total two-wheeler sales down: 22.24%

Passenger Vehicle Segment

  • In passenger cars, the sales are down by 41.09%. The total units sold in August were 1,15,957 units versus 1,96,847 units in the previous month. 
  • While utility vehicles sales are down by 2.20%. 71,478 units sold versus 73,085 units in last month. 
  • Vans sales are also down by 47.36%. 9,089 units sold vs 17,266 in the last month. 

The overall degrowth is 31.57%.

Two wheelers segment

  • Scooters sales down by 22.19%; 5,20,898 units sold vs 6,69,416 units in the previous month.  
  • Motorcycle sales are also down by 22.22%. Only 9,37,486 units sold versus 12,07 005 units in the last month.  
  • Mopeds sales down by 21.26%. 55,812 units sold in August versus 70,883 units in the last month. 

Overall degrowth in the two-wheeler segment is 22.24% for the month of August.
