Mumbai: Heavy rain likely in island city, suburbs today

APMC Road, Vashi, after a spell of heavy rain on Sunday
MUMBAI: Mumbaikars are likely to witness heavy rain at isolated places in the island city and the suburbs on Monday, forecasts IMD.
The city experienced another wet weekend as heavy rainfall continued, forcing Mumbaikars to stay indoors. The total rainfall received this season till Sunday was 3,286.4mm, which is the first time since 2011 that Mumbai's annual rainfall has crossed 3,000mm.
On Sunday, between 8am and 7pm, BMC's automatic weather stations at Bombay Central (Nair Hospital) recorded 50.78mm rain, Wadala 47mm, Parel 46.2mm, Byculla 48.26mm and Haji Ali 46.2mm. In the suburbs, Vikrohli recorded 28.93mm, Vile Parle 23.34 mm, Kandivli 18.29mm, Dindoshi 37.83mm and Versova 13.67mm.

Significant rain activity was witnessed also in the 24 hours between Saturday and Sunday ending at 8.30am, when IMD's Colaba centre recorded 66.4mm (heavy rain) and Santacruz 119mm (very heavy rain). K S Hosalikar, deputy director-general of IMD's western region issued a warning on Sunday evening about intense spells expected in areas of Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts. "The southwest monsoon was vigorous over Konkan-Goa. The east-west shear zone now and the offshore trough at mean sea level from south Gujarat coast to Karnataka coast, which now runs from south Gujarat coast to north Kerala coast, continued to give rains to the city," said an IMD official.
Rain this season has been intense. The last time Mumbai recorded more rainfall than received till now this monsoon was 3,327.9mm in 2010. The 2011 total was 3,154.8mm in comparison. The next year was a lot drier, with 1,867.3mm, similar to what was received by the city in 2015. The city's annual average rainfall is 2,514mm.
