Work on construction of a new regulator and erection of piles for supporting the new regulator across the Kollidam at Mukkombu Upper Anicut has been suspended due to discharge of surplus water in the Kollidam.
The Public Works department originally planned to discharge surplus water from the northern arm of Kollidam regulator so as to continue work in some areas of the project site.
But officials changed the decision and began discharging water from the southern arm of the regulator, a portion of it was washed away due to heavy flow of water last year, from Sunday.
Subsequent to the discharge of surplus water, the companies that are undertaking work on the construction of a new regulator, sanctioned at a cost of ₹387.60 crore, and erecting piles, estimated to cost ₹38.85 crore, to support the new regulator, have suspended the work.
All machinery and construction equipment engaged for the work have been moved to safer areas.
While laying foundation for the new regulator is at the preliminary stage, work on erecting piles across the Kollidam is making steady progress.
Officials of the Public Works department said construction work was suspended due to discharge of surplus water.
It was only for a few days and work would resume once the discharge in Kollidam river was stopped, they added.
