BENGLAURU: A Bengaluru civil engineer, who enabled the call recording option to track his wife’s calls to her lover, got the shock of his life two weeks ago when he heard the duo discussing plans to knock down his motorcycle and run over him in front of KSR City railway station.
Playing along with the plot, he, however, rode with his wife to Vijayanagar police station where he played the phone conversation recordings to cops. Police arrested the woman’s boyfriend and the engineer preferred not to press charges against his wife and both have consented to a divorce.
It all began in mid-2016 when Kumaraswamy, 34, and Nisha 24, (names changed) were staying in a rented place in KR Puram. “Nisha got into a relationship with the landlord’s son who was of her age. After a few months, the husband suspected something amiss and the family shifted to another house in Vijayanagar,” said BS Saraswathi, senior counsellor at Parihar, Vanitha Sahayavani family counselling centre, to whom Vijayanagar police referred the couple for counselling.
Kumaraswamy took away Nisha’s cellphone but she continued talking to the young man on her mother-in-law’s feature phone. “In a casual conversation with his elderly mother a few months ago, the man came to know his wife was using her (mother-in-law) handset by sending her out of the room,” the counsellor added.
Kumaraswamy bought his mother a smartphone and activated the call recording option. An unsuspectingly, Nisha started using the new device and every night, Kumaraswamy would listen to the calls she made to her lover.
Last month, Nisha insisted she wanted to go to her parents’ home in Tumakuru and wanted Kumaraswamy to drop her at the KSR City railway station on his two-wheeler. A few hours later, Kumaraswamy was shocked to hear a recorded conversation on his mother’s cellphone. His wife was telling her paramour she would get her husband to drop her outside the railway station as planned and he agreed to run his SUV over him.
“Kumaraswamy was terrified but pretended nothing had happened. The next morning, he told his wife they are heading to the railway station but rode to the Vijayanagar police station with his wife and proof of the murder plot,” Bindya Yohannan, another counsellor at Parihar who assisted in the case, said.
Vijayanagar police starting probing the husband’s complaint and Nisha’s lover was arrested around August-end. Investigations revealed that Nisha had set up Plan B with another boyfriend in Tumakuru who was to murder Kumaraswamy if the Bengaluru lover failed.
When police began to frame charges against Nisha, her parents managed to convince Kumaraswamy not not to press charges but go for counselling session. The couple finally decided to settle for a mutual divorce for the sake of their four-year-old son, sources added.
