EVM ballot papers brought to Kottayam

The EVM ballot papers to be used in the upcoming byelection in Pala was brought to Kottayam on Monday.

The consignment, brought from the Government Press in Thiruvananthapuram, comprised 400 ballots, 4,500 tendered ballots and 500 postal ballots. The papers, to be set in the EVMs on September 16, will be kept in the District Treasury till then.

The scrutiny of expenses by the candidates will be held at the Lalam Block office by a team led by Expenditure observer N Ashok Babu in three phases on September 12, 16 and 19. The candidates or the agents officially representing them are required to attend the process with their expenditure registers, bills, vouchers and bank pass book.

The election authority has set a maximum limit of ₹28 lakh as the total election expense of each of the candidate. In default of attending the verification process, actions shall be initiated under relevant provisions of the Representation of People Act, informed the district election officer.

Meeting

Meanwhile, the authorities here on Monday held a meeting of the candidates and their agents, besides a meeting to review the functioning of the various official teams working towards the smooth conduct of the election.

The meeting of the candidates and their agents, held in the morning, was also attended by the General Observer Poornima Chauhan and Finance Officer Rachel George.

The candidates and their agents were also given a training in calculating and registering their election expenses.

Expenditure Observer N.Ashok Babu led the official review meeting in the afternoon, which was also attended by the teams on Video Surveillance, Anti-Defacement, Flying Squad and representatives of the Police and the Excise.
