Head constable, jail warder arrested after undertrial escapes

PATIALA: The district police on Sunday arrested a head constable and a jail warder after an undertrial facing charges under the NDPS escaped from Government Rajindra Hospital, where he was admitted following some cardiovascular problems.
It was learnt that Navjot Singh, son of Budh Ram and a resident of Bazigar Basti, Dhuri in Sangrur district, who was in judicial custody and was lodged at the Patiala Central Jail, was admitted to the hospital on Friday, from where he went missing on Sunday morning. He had been booked under Sections 22 /61/ 85 of the NDPS Act at the Bakhshiwal Patiala station.

During preliminary investigation, it came forth that head constable Jaswant Singh, who was on guard duty with the prisoner, accompanied him to a dhaba outside the hospital, where Jaswant allowed him to use his mobile phone to make some calls. A few unknown persons also joined them over there. Thereafter, the accused Navjot Singh managed to escape from his custody around 10.30pm. But the information to the local police was given at around 4am by Jaswant. Further, jail warder Sukhwinder Singh was found absent from duty.
The police said a case under Sections 222, 223, 224, 225 and 109 of the IPC has been registered against the Navjot, Jaswant and Sukhwinder at the civil lines police station in Patiala and three unknown persons.
