KOLKATA: The Chingrighata flyover will be thrown open to traffic at 11:30am on Monday after KMDA engineers stressed they needed three-and-a-half hours more to complete the load capacity tests. The flyover has been shut down for traffic since 9pm on Friday leading to bumper-to-bumper traffic gridlock on EM Bypass and the southern flanks of Maa Flyover and
Park Circus connector.
Police on Sunday were desperate to avoid a similar situation during the Monday office-hours and insisted on the earlier 8am deadline. But after a meeting on Sunday with KMDA engineers they acceded to the revised 11:30am timeline. KMDA engineers said they needed till 11am to remove the sensors.
“These sensors are designed to test the intensity of the friction and the tremors that the bridge can bear,” a KMDA engineer said.
“We are diverting traffic from the Beliaghata Building More to the Broadway Road so vehicles heading for Sector V only have to make a short detour,” said an officer.
The cars heading for the Maa Flyover from the AJC Bose Road flyover are being diverted towards the APC Road, followed by Beliaghata Main Road or Narkeldanga Main Road from Rajabazar or further north
Maniktala Main Road. People are being advised to take the CIT Road for northwards journey to Salt Lake, Airport or VIP Road.
“We are not closing the Maa flyover for now but the cars coming in from Park Circus seven-point crossing will be diverted to the roads below the flyover and the cars coming from Victoria Memorial side will be allowed to use the flyover,” said a senior officer.
