Fisheries Minister D. Jayakumar on Monday laid the foundation for a ₹100-crore fishing harbour at Vellapallam near Thalaignayiru in the district.
The project reflected the government’s keenness to scale up sea food production. The government was also opening fish landing centres and promoting deep sea fishing through subsidy scheme, the Minister said.

Fisheries resources was vital to ensure food security, and sustaining livelihood, he added.
The announcement for the new fishing harbours at Vellapallam and Tranquebar was made by Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami during the centenary celebrations of former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran.
Textiles Minister O.S. Manian, Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Fisheries Development Corporation Limited G.S. Sameeran, Collector S. Suresh Kumar, Nagapattinam MP M. Selvaraju and Poompuhar MLA S. Pavunraj also took part.
