Buckingham Palace staff are forewarned about how members of the royal family will be depicted in The Crown so they can 'brace themselves' for the show, a writer has revealed.

The Netflix series' creator Peter Morgan, 56, told the Times he gives four briefings a year to 'people who are very high ranking and very active' within the 'organisation'.

He said: 'Respectfully, I tell them what I have in mind and they brace themselves slightly.'

The writer also confessed he has no interest in injecting 'satire' into the series, and is 'constantly trying to steer it in the other direction, towards something heroic'.

'The wheels on this show want it to do satire, which is what we love doing with our political leaders and royals', he said. 'But I'm not remotely interested in that. I'm constantly trying to steer it in the other direction, towards something heroic'.

David Rankin-Hunt, who acts as protocol adviser on the show, added that although he is unsure whether the Queen herself watches the drama, he is aware senior members of the royal household are big fans.

The former army officer, who worked in the household for 33 years, said he believes they wouldn't be so fond of the production was there some 'indication from up high' that it was a 'scandalous production'.

He said: 'If there were some indication from on high that it was some kind of scandalous production, that might be reflected in their view, don’t you think?'
