PUNE: The
India Meteorological Department has forecast a wet week ahead for the city.
The Met department said the intensity of the showers was likely to decrease, but there will be no respite as the city will continue to receive rainfall.
“The movement of the weather systems around the eastern parts of the country will have impact on the rainfall activity of these regions. Currently, a low-pressure area is present around Odisha and Chhattisgarh. If it travels towards Madhya Pradesh, it will intensify the rainfall activity in Maharashtra, but if it goes toward the northern parts, the showers will reduce,” a senior official of IMD said.
The official added that the Marathwada region, which recorded heavy showers recently, will see a reduction in rainfall activity.
As per the daily weather report of the IMD, an offshore trough is present along the coast from south Gujarat to north Kerala. “This trough will also have an impact on the rainfall activity in the state,” the official said.
According to officials from the state water resources (formerly irrigation) department, heavy rainfall activity was witnessed in the catchments of the four dams that provide water to the city — Khadakwasla, Temghar, Panshet and Varasgaon. Three of the four dams were filled to capacity, officials said, adding that the collective water stock in all four dams stood at 29 thousand million cubic feet (TMC), or 99.49% of the total capacity.
“These catchments have been witnessing showers for the past couple of days. After a marginal drop early on Sunday morning, the activity picked up again in the afternoon, leading to an increase in the water levels as well the water discharge,” an official said.
The rate of discharge from Khadakwasla was reduced to 13,000 cusec early on Sunday morning, before it was increased to 18,000 cusec in the afternoon.
