The police have intensified security and surveillance in the city in view of Onam rush and the presence of large number of traders doing seasonal business.
Plainclothesmen have been deployed in areas where people gather in large numbers for purchase and entertainment.
For a foolproof surveillance, the authorities have ensured that all closed circuit television cameras are functional.
The control room has been equipped to get round-the-clock live feeds. Vehicle checking has been intensified to prevent drunk driving and attempts to smuggle in liquor and drugs.
Additional police personnel will be posted at all aid posts to quickly respond to complaints from the public. The aid post on the Kozhikode beach and S.M. Street will function extra hours. Moreover, sufficient number of women police personnel in plainclothes will be deployed to ensure women’s safety.
A civil police officer attached to the Town Station said chances of pickpocketing and theft were high during the festival season. Though police deployment has been strengthened in places like S.M. Street, personal vigil is crucial to ensure a safe celebration, he added.
The District Anti Narcotic Special Action Force (DANSAF) is also keeping vigil against attempts to smuggle in drugs and banned tobacco products. Members of the force are coordinating with their counterparts in other districts to track down suspicious persons, vehicles, and consignments. Bus and railway stations will be brought under close scrutiny to keep tabs on suspicious drug carriers.
Excise officials said their striking forces had been on the field for more than a week to prevent attempts to smuggle liquor. Searches have been conducted in rural areas where hooch dens are reportedly operated.
