Though a call to the helpline (103) is expected to be followed by the traffic police taking action against such issues, residents said that it is not the case. “When our lane was entirely blocked by two-wheelers on day, I called the helpline and spoke to the officers on duty. But none of it had ever yielded any positive long-term results. Despite numerous calls, the officers do not turn up to solve our problem,” said another resident.
Residents rue that anti-social activities by the tipplers from nearby bars have also become common in the locality. “Some of the vehicle owners argue with residents when we object them to park in front of our homes,” said Pushpa Raj, a resident of Venkatraman Canal Street. She added that it becomes difficult for the residents to go out and pass through the street or park vehicles near the homes because it is occupied by non-residents. “Moreover, tipplers often throw liquor bottles and other garbage near the street and go,” she said.
When contacted, the local traffic police personnel said that they inspected the area when the complaints were raised and vehicles were seized when they were not removed immediately. However, the officer said that the restaurants were responsible to provide space for parking to prevent this issue and a long-term solution to the problem will be sought soon.
Raghukumar Choodamani, a resident of Perambur, said, “I have lodged various petitions regarding the unauthorised parking on the street and have raised the issue with officials. But the lane remains blocked by two-wheelers for most of the day.”
