2020 Toyota Supra And VW Golf R Engage In Drag War

Due to mixing its Japanese DNA with that of Bavaria, the all-new Supra has received some flak. However, it actually is a very capable sports car in its own right.

Its predecessor used to be a common sight at drag strips all over the world, with most examples were far from stock.

This 2020 Supra however, doesn’t feature any mods whatsoever, so the 3.0-liter, inline-six kicks out 335 HP (340 PS / 250 kW) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. Nought to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) is dispatched in 4.3 seconds and top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).

The challenger to the rear-wheel drive sports car was none other than a Volkswagen Golf R. The all-wheel drive hot hatch can still teach a lesson or two to most of its rivals, despite being almost ready to be retired. Powering it is a 2.0-liter turbo-four that produces 306 hp (310 PS / 228 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque, which helps it rocket to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.6 seconds. Get it with the optional Performance Pack and top speed will lift to 168 mph (270 km/h).

Being 0.3 seconds quicker to 62 mph than the Golf R and slightly more powerful, the Supra is the favorite in this race. However, everyone knows that the German hot hatch is a die-hard machine, plus it’s got all-wheel drive on its side, the outcome is not as clear-cut as it might seem at first glance.
