1988 M6 Is The Grand Daddy Of BMW’s Modern Uber Grand Tourers

The BMW M6 is sadly no more, having being replaced by the M8, yet it did enjoy a good, long run that lasted three decades – albeit with a “sabbatical” between the first and second-gen models.

A prime example of the car that started it all is located in Columbus, Ohio and is a first generation model from 1988. The Bring A Trailer listing reveals that it will change hands with factory books and manuals, a Carfax report, and a clean Ohio title, and while it did suffer some damage in an October 1993 accident, it appears to be in very good shape.

Sitting beneath the timeless body of the E24-generation M6 is a 3.5-liter S38B35 inline-six, which in North American-spec delivered 256 HP and 243 lb-ft (329 Nm) of torque. Power is fed to the rear wheels through a Getrag five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. Mileage sits at 110,000 miles (177,027 km) which isn’t exactly low, but it’s not too bad for a vehicle of this age either.

A handful of things were done to the car by the dealer before being put up for auction. For example, they fitted lightweight 16-inch wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ tires, new rear shocks, a Racing Dynamics front strut brace, flushed the brake fluids, replaced the fuel pump and changed and the oil and coolant.

Both the interior and exterior look to be in good condition, and we’ve got no doubt the winning bidder will soon start turning heads in their local neighborhood driving a car like this. With less than 24 hours to go, the top bid stands at $20,250, which sounds reasonable for a classic M car.
