KOLKATA: The
traffic police top brass and
traffic guards in the
Behala area want the
KMDA to prioritize certain infrastructure plans to make it easier for commuters during the
Puja. While the cops want the new Izzatullah Lane bridge, that will act as a parallel alternative to the Tollygunge Circular Road, to open at the earliest, they also want the permission to reopen the
Chetla Lock Gate bridge come through as soon as possible.
Besides, police have also decided to change vehicular circulation plan in the area on their own to try and bring some order to the everyday chaos. “One idea is to try and change the tidal movement pattern of the Alipore-New Alipore Bailey bridge. Now, vehicles move towards Alipore in the morning and towards Behala in the evening. We might reverse this during the Puja according to the requirement, as we believe there will be an explosion of pedestrians in the evening but the number of private cars using the Bailey bridge (not Durgapur Bridge) will go down,” said a top cop from Lalbazar.
The brass are also looking for help from the railways. “At present, a goods train sets us back by 20 minutes, leading to piling up of traffic on both sides of the Bailey bridge. We want the railways to inform us about the goods train schedule here, at least during Durga Puja, so that we can divert vehicles during those periods,” said DC (traffic) Santosh Pandey.
Top officers said to decongest Durgapur Bridge, it was important to ease the jams on Tollygunge Circular Road. “Vehicles coming from Circular Road can take the Izzatullah Lane Bridge, avoiding Tollygunge Phari and Tollygunge Circular road. So far as the new bridge at Karunamoyee is concerned, it will help ease the pressure on
Karunamoyee Bridge, which now bears load beyond its capacity,” said an officer from the southwest traffic guard.
KMDA will throw open two bridges—one on Izatullah Lane and the Karunamoyee bridge in Tollygunge—to one-way traffic soon. KMDA has also sought permission from Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) to construct a Bailey bridge adjacent to the now-closed Chetla Lock Gate bridge. This, after the Kolkata Police repeatedly expressed their concerns to both KMDA and KoPT, saying given the bottlenecks, it would be difficult to manage traffic during Puja.
