Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) President K.S. Alagiri has said the transfer of Madras High Court Chief Justice Vijaya Kamlesh Tahilramani and her subsequent resignation were yet another instance of Modi government’s scant respect for democracy.

Talking to reporters here on Sunday, Mr Alagiri said the resignation of the Chief Justice, who held an impeccable record, was disturbing and shocking. Like her, several eminent persons in judiciary, Indian Administrative Service, Central investigating agencies, autonomous institutions and Reserve Bank of India had quit in the recent past or are quitting one by one after the BJP came to power and this did not augur well for democracy.

He said if it was disheartening that ISRO scientists lost communication with Vikaram lander of Chandrayan 2 when it was about make a soft landing on the moon, it was equally disappointing and disheartening that eminent people like Ms Justice Tahilramani and others were leaving when their services were needed for the nation.

Mr. Alagiri also launched a tirade against the BJP government at the Centre, alleging that it failed on all fronts in the five years during 2014-19 and in the 100 days after coming back to power in 2019. Prime Minister Narendra Modi could not be faulted if he was not an economist but he was at fault for not taking economists into confidence when he took crucial decisions like demonetisation.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had warned that the demonetisation would result in reduction of growth rate by 1% but the Modi government ended up witnessing 3% reduction in the growth rate, he said.

The Indian economy was in ‘doldrums’ and the automobile sector had witnessed a record slowdown due to the wrong policies of the Modi government, he alleged.

The government borrowing surplus of ₹1.76 lakh crore from the RBI showed that ‘all is not well with the country’s economy,’ he said.

Mr. Alagiri also denounced the government for arresting senior leader P. Chidambaram after implicating him in the Aircel Maxis case. The CBI, which could not point a single charge against Mr. Chidambaram, had arrested him at the behest of the government to wreak vengeance.

“This is nothing but politics of vengeance,” he alleged. DMK president M.K. Stalin had condemned the arrest in a strongly worded statement, he said answering a question.
