No-parking zones fine, but where’s parking spot?

Traffic policemen tow away a two-wheeler from no-parking zone near Kargil Chowk
PATNA: With the traffic police towing away vehicles from no-parking zones, motorists in the city, especially at commercial hubs like Fraser Road, Exhibition Road and Bailey Road, are in complete tizzy as they don’t know where to park their vehicles in the absence of parking zones.
The motorists are complaining about inconvenience due to lack of authorized parking spaces in the city.
“There is no authorized parking space on nearly 2km stretch of Fraser Road between Bhartiya Nritya Kala Mandir and J P roundabout. Vehicles are towed even if they are parked on the footpath, which were earlier earmarked for vehicular parking. As a result, we park vehicles 1-2 km away from our office building,” said Hari, an office-goer.
Raj Kumar Bairolia, a resident of Exhibition Road, said, “No-parking boards have been put up on most roads in the city. However, one can hardly spot authorised parking slots. Lack of parking spaces in prominent localities, including Bailey Road, Exhibition Road and Fraser Road, is causing inconvenience to motorists. I don’t know where to park my car.”
Traffic SP D Amarkesh has, however, advised people to park their vehicles only at the authorized parking spaces. “Vehicles are being towed away because people don’t adhere to parking norms. They park their vehicles along the roads, causing traffic snarls. The drive against illegal parking will continue,” he added.
Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials, on their part, said the new parking spaces would be earmarked soon for the convenience of motorists. “It’s just a matter of time. We are in the process of streamlining traffic in the city. Parking spaces will be created soon,” said a PMC officer.
Bihar Rajya Pul Nirman Nigam (BRPNN) has proposed creation of parking spaces below the flyovers on Bailey Road, Exhibition Road and Chiraiyatand.

A senior BRPNN official said as many as 234 cars and 468 bikes could be parked below the Bailey Road flyover between pillar numbers 4 and 50. “At least 420 bikes and 210 cars can be parked between pillar numbers 51 and 94. Similarly, 91 bikes and 136 cars can be parked below the Exhibition Road flyover. The space below Station Road flyover can accommodate 64 bikes and 114 cars,” the official added.
He said people will have to pay for parking their vehicles below the flyovers. “Two-wheelers will be charged Rs 10 and four-wheelers Rs 20 for the first three hours. Thereafter, an additional amount of Rs10 will be charged for every hour,” the BRPNN official added.
