Ganpati festival: Rain in Mumbai dampens mandal collections, number of devotees

Of Rs 8.5 crore, Rs 20 lakh is the combined earning from gold (310gm) and silver (7.5 kilo) offerings
MUMBAI: The weekend turnout at Ganpati pandals remained sporadic owing to intermittent spells of rain. On Sunday, the number of pandal hoppers dropped significantly at most venues and was largely restricted to residents of nearby areas.
Until 6pm, a total of 2,762 idols including 62 sarvajanik, 2,627 household ones and 73 moortis of Gauri were immersed. Of these, 377 household idols, 11 public ones and 18 Gauri sculptures were led to artificial lakes.
Swapnil Parab, secretary of the Ganesh Gully mandal, said footfalls rose and fell with the intensity of rain. "We have erected a waterproof shed leading from the courtyard to the pandal, but as the lines extended on the road, visitors took shelter under awnings and inside shops as the rain pelted down," he said.
A section of devotees was engaged elsewhere as Sunday was the seventh day of immersion. "We are on duty till the last household and sarvajanik idols are immersed in Girgaum Chowpatty. In 2018, 126 public and 1,000 household moortis were brought here," said Suryakant Banger, senior inspector of D B Marg police station.
Meanwhile the fifth day visarjan of the GSB Seva Mandal, King's Circle, ended Saturday morning after a night-long procession. Mandal president Ramesh Bhandarkar said, "We left the pandal at 9pm Friday and completed the ritual by 8.30am Saturday. Approximately 6,000 people accompanied us till the end. There were several more who left in time to catch the last train from Dadar at 1am. There was light rain en route and we were soaked to the skin but everything passed off well despite a change in route caused by Metro Rail construction."

The double whammy of rain and recession has impacted collections at GSB King's Circle which is Mumbai's richest Ganpati. "We have received approximately Rs 8.5 crore including cash and gold-silver offerings. While counting is still under way, we are not likely to cross last year's figure of Rs 9 crore. Rain and recession have dampened footfalls and earnings," said spokesman RG Bhat.
