PATIALA: An Employee Provident Fund (EPF) scam came to light after a joint commissioner of
Patiala Municipal Corporation (
PMC) had sought details from the private outsourcing firm to submit
EPF details of the employees.
The firm – M/s Aspect Solutions Private limited- was supposed to deposit the deducted EPF of the employees that were recruited by the firm and were provided to the municipal corporation. These outsourced employees including Safai Sewaks were demanding their EPF for a long time.
Under the Patiala Municipal Corporation, around 600 employees are working on outsourcing. Besides M/s Aspect Solutions Private limited the employees to PMC were provided by another firm M/s
Secure Guard Power Service Limited.
The PMC authorities questioned both the private firms to submit the details of EPF but all in vain. The PMC officials claimed that M/s Aspect Solutions Private limited was supposed to deposit the EPF amount of Rs 1.52 crores in a term of last three years approximately, however when asked about the details the firm could not show any documents of EPF amounting Rs 1.17 crores.
The officials then asked the private firm to deposit the money following which the private firm deposited Rs 94 lakh of embezzled amount.
“The private firm had embezzled the EPF money of the outsourced employees as they had failed to deposit the EPF amount during the period of April 2015 to April 2018. When asked, the company failed to submit the details of deposited EPF. Later, we collected the embezzled amount from the company before taking any action. The company failed to submit the entire embezzled amount of the employee provident fund following which the complaint was given to the police for further action,” said PMC Commissioner GS Khaira.
Notably, the police has also registered a separate case against the M/s Secure Guard Power Service Limited and four of its employees for embezzling the EPF amount.
The case against both the companies and four employees of M/s Secure Guard Power Service Limited has been registered under the sections of cheating and other sections of Indian Penal Code.
“The probe has been initiated but no arrests have been made so far. We are getting complete details of the total EPF amount embezzled by the companies and the total number of employees,” he added.
The PMC authorities claimed that the private firms have embezzled the EPF amount of around 300 outsourced employees including Safai Sewaks, Data Entry Operators, employees working in the water supply and sewerage department, few gardners and peons besides security guards.
