Pune: Virtual friend held for theft, booty worth Rs 12 lakh recovered

PUNE: A woman’s friend on a social networking site stole the keys of her house during one of his two visits to her place and used them to steal gold ornaments and other valuables together worth Rs 14 lakh from her residence in the Market Yard area on Friday afternoon when she and her husband had gone out for 45 minutes.
The man, Nilesh Sharad Taware (29) of Shahpuri in Satara, was arrested on Saturday morning. A crime branch team headed by inspector Datta Chavan zeroed in on Taware, a criminal on police records. Cash and valuables totally worth Rs11.93 lakh was recovered from him.
The 40-year-old flat-owner had lodged a complaint with the Market Yard police stating that someone had stolen valuables worth Rs14.4 lakh from his locked house.
The Market Yard police and the crime branch police visited the spot and realized that the suspect had not broken any locks or window grilles, nor had he entered the house through the balcony. When the police tried checking the footage of the CCTV cameras installed on the society premises, they realized that they were defunct. However, the CCTV camera of a bungalow in front of the society had captured images of Taware.
Police found that the suspect had visited the complainant’s house twice in the past few months and that he was a friend of the complainant’s wife on a social networking site. During one of his visits, he had stolen the keys of the flat’s front door.

While chatting with the complainant’s wife, he came to know that they were going out on Friday afternoon. He visited their house at that time, and stole the valuables after opening the door with the stolen keys, the police said.
While stealing the valuables, he also stole an ATM card and used it in Satara. It provided the policemen with a clue about his whereabouts.
